Ruse Hydrogen Project in the context of Bulgarian climate targets, role of hydrogen in Bulgaria and plans for Danube ports to export hydrogen to Germany via the Danube was launched in summer 2020.

The project is for deployment of hydrogen infrastructure – green hydrogen production installation (solar PV, electrolyzer, hydrogen refueling station), of a retrofitted FC maritime vessel and purchase of FC buses. The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) provides Project Development Assistance (PDA) for detailed project planning and development.

Тhe Project Delivery Group represent the chain of the deployment of the technology in Ruse region and broader Danube region: Ruse Municipality, Ruse Municipal Transport J.S.Co, University of Ruse, Bulgarian River Shipping J.S.Co, the Association of Danube River Municipalities, Bulgarian Hydrogen, Fuel Cell and Energy Storage Association and Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

PDG ultimate objective is to build a ‘hydrogen community’ in the Danube region in Bulgaria, engaged with the deployment of green hydrogen infrastructure and vessels/ vehicles as one of the ways to address the decarbonization of transport infrastructure and services. This done through taking actions on the necessary legislative/regulatory adaptation and respective adaptation in education and training programmes; securing funds; development and implementation of similar projects in the Danube region in Bulgaria.
